The smallest bedrooms in the house are usually the kids rooms. Sometimes there is only enough space for a bed, a nightstand and a chest of drawers to fit comfortably. There is no room for play and it can become cluttered quickly with little or no storage space.
When the room has to be shared it can be even harder to find space. The choice for this situation is usually a bunk bed. There are other options as well. A loft bed takes up the least amount of space because all of the space under it is still usable. These can be purchased, made or modified. Trundle beds work well. There is one primary bed and another bed underneath the is set on wheels. The secondary bed just slides back underneath when not in use.
A desk can take up quite a bit of space in a room. A desk built into the bed is a good way to save that space. Loft beds with desk can be purchased. The desk is typically part of the construction of the bed at the end of the bed. Some bunk beds have a built in desk option as well.
Having enough storage is always an issue. With kids if there is not enough space things start ending up on the floor, and behind and under the bed. They then spread to other areas of the house. Storage that is stackable is the answer. Everything goes vertical. Bins made of clear plastic are the top option. The kids are able to look into them and see if what they want is in it without taking it out. Ones with lids can fit on shelves to keep things organized. Open front bins make it even easier. Since all things have a place kids will be able to help with keeping their room organized.
The space underneath the bed can be utilized for more than dust bunnies and shoes that go missing. Beds are available that have drawers built in underneath. Much like the trundle bed these drawers slide out from under the bed. Depending on the height of the bed they can be deep and may be one long drawer or four smaller drawers. There are plastic storage bins that can fit under a normal bed. These would be used for those things that aren’t used often.
Storage bags that are vacuum sealed are super space savers. A large item or a large amount of clothing can fit into a space that is only a couple of inches thick. You can pile them on top of each other at the top of the closet. When winter is over put the bulky comforters in them and put them away. As the seasons change take out one season and put away another. This way the closet and drawers are never crowded with clothing.
An over the door shoe organizer can be used for art supplies. Each pocket can hold, a set of crayons, a set of brushes, different paint sets and paper. Kids often have their own things they like to collect. This is the perfect place to make sure those buttons, stickers, rocks, balls, etc. Are kept in one place. Other supplies like empty toilet paper rolls, felt, glue, glitter, and of course shoes can fit in it.
Use any one of these ideas or all of them to keep you child organized and still have some play space left over. To get the maximum usage of space the loft bed with desk is the top option. You can put multiple kinds of storage underneath and still have space available under it for play.
