A Little Introduction To The London Kings Cross St Pancras Region

In the 1700s, the Kings Cross was known as Battle Bridge and that is where its history begins. It got its original name from a crossing over the River Fleet. The area was named Kings Cross much later which was sometime in the 19th Century. This was during the time of King George IV when a statue of the king was put up at the cross roads of The New Road and Maiden Lane. Nowadays, these roads are called Euston Road and York Way. The sculpture at this junction was pulled down later on but the name remained and is still being used up to date.

The area has many great stories told about it. This revolves around the period of Queen Boadicea to King George III and the construction of the railway station in the mid 1800s. Many of these stories are about insurgencies, wars, victories and all types of historic events. Hence, the Kings Cross place is a significant historic area that has intriguing realities, stories and myths from the Roman era up to date. There seems to be an amazing story behind most of the buildings and sites that are found in the place. Because of this, Kings Cross has become a key attraction for both foreign and local visitors.

The place was significant to the transport industry as early as in the 1700s. The initial main transport project for the place was The New Road which was a direct way between Paddington and the City. Later on, the railway and Kings Cross railway station followed. With the rise and progress of transport and traffic the next rational thing was to develop accommodation. The cheap hotels London initially offered accommodation for workers developing infrastructure as well as those working in the transport sector. With time it came to accommodate travelers and tourists which is the case to this date. As the years progress, Kings Cross has come to know many changes which have brought about its rise and fall. The worst times for the area was after World War II, a time that saw it almost completely abandoned. After this period, Kings Cross became home to criminals, drug dealers and prostitutes. In the 1980s it was among the most unsafe places in London. The bad status brought about slow advancement of development as investors shunned the area.

In the 1990s, government intervention helped get the area back on track. Various rehabilitation projects were started for both the road and railway network and also for the residents of the place. This was followed by the opening of a good number of cultural institutions as well as upgrading of accommodation facilities in the area. Before long, money for the development came in quickly and the place started getting back to its feet gradually. Currently, Kings Cross is among the greatest places in London and has got some of the most outstanding accommodation in the city. The good reputation of Kings Cross hotels has brought back the area to its magnificent days when it attracted people from every where.
