The Value Of Disney

Driving through Orlando the other day, I passed a billboard advertising Disney’s “Princess Makeover.

And that got me thinking what type of Disney-esque names I could give the animals who reside with me. Grumpy, Lumpy, and Dopey? Or maybe Thunder Mouth, Barks at Nothing, and Craps on Porch?

Not long ago, I spent the day at Disney with 4 children, two teenagers, and my brother-in-law. My “princess makeover” involved finding severely sunburned, although I had on a dark shirt. I sweated in ninety-degree heat, then my hair frizzed up and my feet turned black in my flip flops when it rained. I got home late at night and was already in my pajamas when a member of my household began whining over some chafing in delicate areas and expressed a will need for me to quickly throw a sweatshirt on over my pajamas and go towards the 24-hour CVS for a tube of diaper rash cream.

(And for the record, CVS does not preserve the Boudreaux’s Butt Paste within the aisle with the diapers. It’s next towards the toothpaste. Maybe it has a thing to complete with the word “paste”? I realize that item placement in drugstores is just not an exact science, but excellent God, diaper cream next to the toothpaste? Really?)

When my former husband was in rehab, the folks running that joint told me that the Disney model of princess meets prince and then lives happily ever following is triggered our marital troubles in the initial place.

People adore anything and every thing related to Disney plus the porcelain doll collecting community is active and excited. Disney porcelain dolls represent a best merger for collectors.

Huh? First of all, I was by no means a Disney princess. I never dressed up in the Cinderella gown and said, “Someday my prince will come.” My pretend games have been somewhat far more realistic than that. “

Where I got into trouble, I believe, was sitting for hours each and every day reading romance novels. The characters didn’t kiss till they have been engaged. But the formula for each and every one of these books was the same; the heroine can be a needy, normally shy and fearful, young lady who meets an older, slightly-flawed-yet-powerful man who treats her horribly at first. Once he realizes just how sweet and excellent and superior she is, he falls madly for her and cannot wait to marry her so he can treat her like the absolute princess she is for the rest of happily ever after.

Makes you wish to vomit, right? But this will be the kind of issue a young girl starts reading following a childhood of becoming taught she’s a princess inside the Disney tradition. Sadly, reality cannot even come close to competing with this dream.
